MURANO THE ISLAND OF GLASS: A BIT OF HISTORY

Murano is an island with about 4000 inhabitants, located in the north of the venetian lagoon, famous all over the world for the production of marvellous glass products The name “Murano” derives from “Amurianum”, which in turn comes from Amurianas, one of ancient roman gate of Altino (located near the venetian lagoon), from where some inhabitants fled for refuge after the fall of the Roman Empire and the invasions from the north by the Huns and Germanic peoples.

The activity of glass processing began in Venice in the tenth century and then moved in Murano in the 1291, both to avoid dangerous fire in Venice and to exert a greater control over the furnaces and the glassmakers thus avoiding that the secrets of this art could be leaked outside its borders.
The art of glass was known by the inhabitants of Muranowas, both for their roman origins and for the knowledge transmitted by immigrants from the East, who escaped from Constantinople.

Murano thus became the first industrial district in the world; while now it’s the home of the manufacturing of artistic and luxury products, it once held a monopoly on commercial production in Europe. The imposition of the transfer of glass factories, glassmakers and their respective families to Murano, was accompanied by a series of incentives and, at the same time, restrictions established by the Republic of Venice. Glassmakers achieved a high social status, well above than the other craftsmen of that time. Glassmakers’ daughters were allowed to marry Venetian nobles. glassmakers were also allowed to carry a sword and enjoyed immunity from legal proceedings. These were incetives not only to convince master glassemakers to move to Murano island, but also an encouragement for their children to continue glass processing.

Since the beginning, the companies operating in the Murano glass district they safeguarded their know-how through secrecy. therefore, the production techniques, as well as the recipes to prepare glass past, were handed down from father to son
